The Seasons of Snug Hollow

A daily Appalachian journey through the holler, now a #1 Best Seller.

Spend a full year in the holler, one day at a time. The Seasons of Snug Hollow is a 365-day photo book by Dr. Ryan Joseph Allen. It captures the hills, creeks, meadows and forests of our 290 acres in Kentucky’s Red Lick Valley through every season, from the first redbuds and daffodils of spring to the quiet snowfall of winter.

A Photograph and a Reflection for Every Day

Each day pairs a photograph taken here on the land with a quote chosen to go with it. The words come from writers who knew the land and its seasons, from Appalachian voices like Emma Bell Miles and Horace Kephart to Emily Dickinson, Henry David Thoreau and Robert Frost. Each season opens with a reflection from Ryan, and the year closes with his words on love.

Just as the Holler Offered It

Every photo was taken on an iPhone and left exactly as it was, with no editing and no filters. It’s a gentle reminder that beauty is waiting right outside your door.
